Where I alive, we don't purchase staff of life past weight, so alter 'bread' to 'cheese' and they're both natural — #1 being rather more common, in my feel.

I agree. Half a pound would be more than likely, but both are possible and natural.

As a compound describing word, shouldn't "half-pound" be hyphenated?

Ah, but what virtually pound cake?:eyes:
For the do good of learners:
one. That's cake, non bread.
2. It got its proper noun because the original recipe called for a pound
of flour, butter, sugar and eggs! That would result in a block that weighs a lot more than than a pound!

We rarely use "a half pound" in BrE.
But that is not to say that nosotros don't. Maybe it's regional, but it sounds OK to me, and non necessarily adjectivally. #2 sounds OK.

If I remember my physics correctly, the law of conservation of mass says that cake would weigh the same as the sum of its ingredients, so not less than four pounds.

Call up your thermodynamics! Cooking would result in a significant loss of mass from evaporation.

But the dry ingredients and eggs alone were iv pounds. In that location would also be liquid mass to make the batter. I stand by my approximate of at least 4 pounds.
